High-End Fitwear: Smart or Snob?

"I can't imagine paying $100 for one pair of yoga pants!!!"

"My ***** brand do the job and I could buy three pairs of them for the price of one pair of Lululemons!!!"

Haven't we heard it all before ladies?  Or said it ourselves?

As I said in an earlier blog, I began working out in Walmart's line of workout wear.  At that time, I would also look through the racks at Winners, at the Superstore for the Joe Fresh line, at Old Navy and the Gap Outlet.  Nothing wrong with that for sure!  They have some good stuff!

The facts are these:

1.  The prices of the clothes from these companies are minimal in comparison with some of the higher-end brands like Lululemon and Under Armour.  If you are budget conscious, and really these days who isn't, these are great options!  Also, if you plan to lose a moderate amount of weight in the near future while working out, shelling out big bucks on workout gear that will only fit for a short time may not be the best idea, so this may be a great option while you slim down! That's what I did.  I waited to invest in more expensive pieces until after I'd lost the weight I wanted so that I could use them longer!

2.  Yes, these clothes will do the job!!  Each of these companies have spent time developing  their own technical materials.  These clothes are designed for wicking sweat as you workout and to move with you as you run, flow, jump, lunge and skip!

The truth is ladies, these lower cost options for workout gear will definitely serve the purpose!

However, if you are seeking something more specific when purchasing workout gear, you may be willing to shell out bigger bucks!

Something that I have found to be true of these brands mentioned above to have in common: High polyester content!

1- In my experience, the higher the polyester content, the less wicking action in the garment.  I also find that this high polyester content also sometimes comes with a strange smell (maybe it's just me that notices this????).  Sometimes the stitching can also be itchy, especially under the arms on tanks and bras.

2- Functional clothes that move and stretch with you and keep their shape are important.  At least it is very important to me, so I feel compelled to say that at times when working out with some of these clothes with higher polyester content, they can lose their shape or sag in the bum area.  No one wants that!  Also, sometimes the tops made from this material stretch in the arms, neck and belly area - everywhere really.  It's my experience that these clothes just aren't as compressive as I like.

3-  The durability factor - do they hold up wear after wear?  Wash after wash?  Workout after workout?  For a little while, yep!  Do they hold up as long/well as some of the higher-end brands?  Not usually.  It's just a fact that I have come to see over time.

For these reasons above (functionality and fit) and for a few others (fashion/style) of some of the higher-end brands, I have moved on and have been willing to shell out more cash for my fitwear!

High-end brands such as Lululemon, Glyder Apparel, Lucy, Yogasmoga, Lole and Under Armour have some higher price tags, that's for sure.  They also have some great features which have catered to those of us who love functional and fashionable fitwear!

1-  Generally, they have lower polyester content percentages.
2 - They are designed with compression and wicking properties which keep you drier and your gear in place like a hug - no sagging bums or stretched out tanks!
3-  These clothes tend to be much more stylish!   I love all of the great color options that are out there in workout tops and tanks!  I am a multipurpose kind of girl and I use my black crops on almost a daily basis!  I wear a pair of them under a sweater dress most days  to work and then when I head to yoga or out for a run, I just change my bra, top, shoes, etc, and away I go! Comfy and functional, crops such as Lululemon's Wunder Unders, Yogasmoga's Run, Jump n' Play Crops, or Glyder's Mantra Crops are way better  than leggings any day!  They hug your body and make your legs look great all day, and then they are compressive and continue to stay in place while you run or flow the evening away!

So, is it worth it to spend primo cash on trendy fitwear?  In my opinion, it is.  For me anyhow.  I know what I like and that is functional, well-fitted gear that moves with me, stays in place, looks good and wicks away the sweat quickly!  For me, it is absolutely worth the cash!

All that being said, it can be really disappointing when you purchase something expensive and it doesn't serve your needs.  This does happen!  Like many others out there, I have tried on or ordered Lululemon pants in the past year since their sheer debacle.  This is always sad and I have had to make returns.  This can be a pain in the butt since I live no where near a store (the closest is 4 hours and a toll bridge away!) so I have to do a lot of my shopping and returns online and through Fed Ex.  I have had a few experiences when I ordered cute crops that did not pass the bend test.  The test is if you can see my underwear in downward dog, the pants are just too sheer and they must go back!  I was absolutely heartbroken this fall when I ordered a pair of the Inkwell Practice Daily Crops and tried them on.  I ordered them in my regular size 6 and the tag said "Full-On Luon", so I was sure that they'd be opaque!  I could have cried when I tried them on.  Right away the waist was at least a size too big!  When I did the bend test in front of a mirror, not only could I see my underwear, but I could almost read the size tag through the material!  Needless to say, those went back!  Every now and then you get a lemon, no matter what price is on the tag!

The message in this madness being:

1- Buy what you are comfortable paying for!  Buy what you budget allows.  If you do want a few high-end items, perhaps purchasing a few key items to add to your fitwear wardrobe (ie crops and bras are your foundation garments and should provide the most structure while you work hard and are good investment pieces).

2- Do your homework if you plan to buy more expensive pieces!  Read online reviews.  Most sites have their own section where customers have sent in reviews for almost every individual product that they offer.  This may help you determine fit and function before buying.  I recommend doing this especially if you are ordering online!  Also, check with fellow workout friends for tips on how they got along with gear that they already have tried.  Most people have favorites and go-to pieces.  Tried and true are usually best.

3- Buy what works for you!  If you don't feel good about dropping a lot of money on clothes that you plan to sweat in, then don't!  There are other options!

High-End Fitwear:  Smart or Snob?

I think that if you purchase clothes that make you feel good and serve a purpose, and that you can fit into your budget, that's always smart.  Buying a ton of gear that you can not afford - this is never good.  Check out online sales and look for product discount codes.  Yogasmoga offers a great return customer incentive called Smogi Bucks (see my earlier blog on Yogasmoga for more details or go to their site).  I've found great codes online for discounts for Glyder Apparel and Lucy as well!

I'd love any feedback on this and any other post on my blog site!

All the best with your sweaty endeavors!
Jamie

Please note that I do not receive any incentives from any of the above mentioned companies and that all of the above is purely in my own opinion, based on my own experiences!

Glyder Apparel

I'm always in search of a new brand of fitness wear.  I look for fun, functional, fashionable fitness wear.  I love bright colors and cool designs.  However, at the top of my list are always fit and function!  I want my workout crops/pants to fit well, to have enough compression to hold me in but not be so tight as to create a dreaded muffin top!  I want the waist band to be supportive enough that it holds me tight while I run, squat, jump, or downward dog without needing constant readjustments!  Doesn't sound like a lot to ask from a pair of workout bottoms that I am willing to drop big bucks on is it?  Easier said that done for sure.

A few months ago someone mentioned Glyder Apparel to me as a new brand.  Right away I went home and searched their website and Googled as many reviews as I could find.  There weren't many reviews out there, and there were none on their site at all, but what I did find was positive.  I even found a 25% off discount code on someone's blog so I decided I would give them a try.

I ordered two pairs of their Mantra Crops ($52); one in Charcoal Heather and the other in Black.

The shipping from Glyder is a little on the expensive side ($45 to Canada) but the price of the crops + the 25% discount helped for sure!  In the end, they were still a lot cheaper than two pairs of Lululemon crops!  They shipped very quickly - I received them only a week after ordering them! The customer service was awesome as well! I had typed in the wrong postal code and emailed them to see if I could fix this - they did so very quickly and sent a very nice email back to reassure me that all was good with my order.  They even asked if I would send them a little feedback on how I liked the crops!

Now, on to the fit!  These crops are super soft.  They feel like butter!  I wore the Charcoal Heather pair to a Moksha Yoga (hot) class and was pleasantly surprised when I didn't once have to adjust the waistband!  Since they were so soft, I thought for sure that I would end up having to pull them up all through the class, but that was not the case!  The fit was snug and soft at the same time.  I really love the wide waist band as well.  The wicking and drying properties of these crops were also a pleasant surprise.  Anyone who has taken any hot yoga class knows that you are drenched all the way through your clothes when you leave.  This was still true for the Mantra Crops.  However, I had  a 10 minute drive home from the yoga studio and by the time I arrived home, my crops were dry already!  That is a first for me for sure!  Next I wore the black Mantra Crops to a bootcamp class.  These crops held up and stayed in place throughout the whole class.  Lots of squats, running, pushups, lunges, etc, and the waistband never moved!

For all of you Lululemon Devotees out there (as I once was), these crops are very similar to Wunder Unders in style and sizing (I usually wear a 6 in Wunder Unders, I purchased a small in the Mantra Crops, but am thinking extra small would have been ok as well) and the material is very much like that of old-style Luon that everyone loved and misses!

The next purchase that I make from Glyder will be for the Ninja Crop Leggings in Black, the Endurance Tank in Seafoam/Seafoam Print, and the Fly Tank in Ocean Mist.

Ninja Crop Legging $68

Seafoam/Seafoam Print

YOGASMOGA Review

One Breath At A Time

Yogasmoga is a recent competitor for the yoga apparel giant Lululemon.  I first heard about Yogasmoga while reading a popular blog post about yoga gear back in April of 2013.  They came upon the scene at a time when Lululemon was going through the whole sheer pants debacle and many of us were on the lookout for something new.  At the time, the company was very new with only a few items to offer.  Prices are comparable to that of Lulu as well.

Yantra Tank

The Yantra Tank ($55) is a racerback style made of the technical material that is exclusive to Yogasmoga called Aurum.  I have two of these tanks.  I think that they could be a tad longer, although they do stay put when you workout (I've worn them to Moksha yoga and bootcamp classes).  This fall they released a fresh crop of new colors for this tank.

Twistie Tank

I haven't tried this tank yet.  It appears to be very similar to the Lululemon Power Y Tank.  It has a shelf bra inside and is designed for low impact workouts and specifically designed for yoga.  The Twistie Tank ($64) originally came in only two or three colors, the one above is called India Blue, but in the fall with the release of new items and colors, they increased their color palette to include pretty hues such as Voilet Twilight and Seattle Mist.

U and Me Bra

The U and Me Bra ($49) was another Yogasmoga original piece.  This is very similar to the Lululemon Flow Y Bra.  Again, this only came in a handful of colors originally but then was released again with pretty colors like this one above (Seattle Mist/Grey Cavier).

Run Jump N' Play Crops

I bought the Run Jump N' Play Crops ($88) right after I saw  them!  They are very similar to the Lululemon Wunder Under Crops.  I bought these in my regular size 6 and they fit like a dream.  They are a little higher rise than the Wunder Unders (not much).  They are have great compression, keep their shape, and NOT AT ALL SHEER!!! They wash wonderfully as well.  No pilling after many runs, bootcamp classes, yoga classes, etc.  I even wear them as tights under long shirts and with boots and they feel great all day!
Originally, these came out in a few colors, Carbon 6 (color above), Carbon 6/India Blue, India Blue, and Tickeled Pink.

This fall when the new items and new colors were added, Yogasmoga put out a coupon that allowed you to get $75 off your order if you bought a top and a bottom, so I bought two more pairs of the Run Jump N' Play Crops in Carbon 6/India Blue and Caviar Grey.  Both fit great.  This second round of crops that came out from Yogasmoga were even nicer than the first round though.  They were softer for one thing and the leg opening at the calf was not as tight as the first crops that I bought back in the spring.  The Caviar Grey crops are super soft, but I do find them a little more sheer than the Carbon 6 black material.

Yogasmoga is a growing company for sure.  Although they still have a small variety of product, it is good quality product!  I, like many others who take care when purchasing fitwear, don't mind paying premium prices as long as the quality is there.  This is a company that I will definitely continue to purchase clothes from.  They ship for free to Canada (this is a US based company) but they do charge return shipping if you return (same as Lululemon though).

A few other new items that appeared on their site in November that I have yet to try but will do in the future:

Tickle Me Tank
($72)

Ballerina Leggings
($98)

Free To Play Crop
($84)

One of the neat things about this company is that it offers you the chance to earn something they call Smogi Bucks!  When someone refers you to Yogasmoga via email and you accept this, you automatically get 25 Smogi Bucks that you can put towards your first purchase!  If you order anything, your friend who referred you will also get 25 Smogi Bucks too!  Every time you purchase anything, your account will accumulate Smogi Bucks that you can bank and use whenever you wish!  Most items you purchase will get you 5 Smogi Bucks each!  I think that this is a nice little incentive.  Kind of a good karma thing for return customers, referring yogi friends and the company alike!

Check out this site and enjoy!

My Intro to Lululemon

As I began working out, I was purchasing workout gear from Walmart.  Sweatpants are sweatpants.  Right??? Wow!  So not true!!!

Wearing high-polyester content workout gear that somewhat fit ok.  At this point, I was just getting myself moving so as long as I was covered up I didn't really care too much about what my clothes were looking like.  I quickly learned that cotton t shirts are not the best workout tops to wear in the summer. It was very early in the first round of bootcamp classes that I took that I heard of Lululemon.  Oh, sure, I'd heard of Lululemon before, but I'd also heard of how much these pants cost.  Seeing as I was paying $17 per pair of workout pants at Walmart, I just could not see myself paying over $100 per pair for pants that may only fit for a short while as I was planning to shed some pounds.  So I waited.

After my first year of working out and as I continued to lose weight and sizes, my old Walmart gear was beginning to get very loose and saggy.  As I got fast and was working out harder, I found it much more difficult to keep these pants up during higher impact workouts.  I decided to give Lululemon a try....and the rest is, as they say, history!

Over the years I have acquired a rather large Lululemon wardrobe.  I still buy the occassional item, but due to the sheerness issue that began last spring, I am buying less and less these days.  The original stuff that I did buy though, older Wunder Unders, Groove Pants, and Cool Racerbacks are the best quality and still look like new!  Some of the newer stuff, however, is a little less durable (more piling, stitching quality and material quality definitely not as great as it once was, etc) and I don't tend to wear/buy as much anymore.

I keep hoping that someday Lululemon will bring back it's original designs and original materials (no more of this luon light business and see through black crops).  If they do, I will definitely keep you posted!!!

****Hint:  Watch the 'We Made Too Much' selection as it changes frequently but every now and then you can still get a steal!

In the Beginning

My fitness journey began in September of 2009 on my 29th birthday thinking, I didn't want to feel like 'this' anymore.  I was tired all the time after work.  I was ‘getting into’ my clothes and not really enjoying it anymore (and I LOVE shopping and buying new clothes!).  I had poor eating habits.  I knew all of this needed to change and I knew that I didn’t want to be 30 years old and still unhealthy. I also had every excuse in the book (I’m too busy with work, I can’t afford to take classes, I can’t afford a nutritionist, I’m not very athletic, etc).  That January I started taking beginner yoga classes once per week.  I LOVED it!  I was absolutely hooked!  I went once each week for the first 6 weeks, then I took two classes a week for the next 12 weeks, doing both the beginner and intermediate classes.  This was the beginning of my journey to health and wellness.

That spring, I was helping my younger sister plan her wedding.  We went to a flower shop to pick out her flowers and were kidding around about losing a few pounds before the wedding.  The lady waiting on us said, “you have to hear about Bethany’s program!  I lost 17 inches in 8 weeks with her!”  Then she called Bethany over and the rest is history!  Bethany is the owner/operator of Synergy fitness and a Registered Dietician/Nutritionist, and she was running a bootcamp in the park near my home.

That May in 2010 I began attending Never Go Back (now Synergy Fitness) classes three times a week after school.  I remember how tough that first class in the park was.  I was truly sore in muscles I didn’t know I had for the first week – and then every week after that for the full 8 weeks!  Right away, I loved the program.  It was tough.  The trainers were very good and made sure all of us were modified where we needed to be for our fitness levels (and mine was pretty low when I started – I couldn’t even do one push up from my toes).  We were held accountable – if you were late there were things you had to do before joining the rest of the class (push ups), and you were called or emailed if you missed classes.  I never had a call and I was never late, but being held accountable kept me going three times a week and I was on time!  During the first fit test we were asked to do a timed mile running.   Mine took almost 14 minutes.  I was happy just to have completed it and was so exhausted when I finished, I was just happy that I didn’t get sick!  Coming on the end of the first round of classes I took, we were asked if anyone was going to run the Deltaware 5K at the end of June.  I laughed.  Yeah right!  I was encouraged that the training I had done would have more than prepared me.  Still, I wasn’t ready to take that plunge, but I did start training on my own and I walk/ran the Gold Cup Trot that summer in 32 minutes exactly.  What an amazing feeling.  Then I wanted more!

Since that first spring in 2010, I’ve been routinely doing 3-4 classes each week at 6 am.  I try to do 3-4 yoga classes each week (less when I am training).  I’ve completed two 30 Day Moksha Yoga Challenges.  I’ve run many 5K and 10K races and one 12K race.  Last year I trained for and completed the PEI Half Marathon.  This year I am training with a friend for the distance of a half marathon, but will be participating in the Corporate Relay during PEI Marathon weekend.  I cut 5 minutes off my 10K this year.  All of these things did not even cross my mind when I turned 29.  At that point, all I wanted to do was ‘lose the weight’ and fit into a smaller size (which I did – I lost 4 sizes and at least 25 lbs).  Now I feel healthier and stronger, both physically and emotionally, than I ever have!  The best feeling is that I don’t question whether or not I can do something anymore, now I just ask myself how long it will take me to train for it.

I’ve worked with Bethany as a trainer, nutritionist and most recently as a running buddy.  Her support has been monumental in my success.  She has always been motivational and sets the bar high for all of us.  Through these classes I have met some of my favorite people and made great friends.  We motivate each other and keep each other accountable in so many ways.  We’ve built a fantastic support system that certainly comes in handy when you are working out together at 6 am!  I’ve been incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful husband who encourages me and has loved me regardless of my size.  He has been there through thick and thin, literally.  He has watched me transform and has been there as I’ve worked to transform my body and mind into a much healthier person and has been incredibly patient while I spend my early mornings and early evenings working out.

For anyone who ever feels that they just aren’t cut out to live a healthy lifestyle, you are!  If I can, you can!  All you have to do is surround yourself with the people who will support you in the right ways, like Bethany with her fitness and nutrition background.  Find a group of likeminded people who have similar goals and do it together.  Remember that you can’t run before you walk – don’t get discouraged when something doesn’t come easily to you right away.  You have to condition your body towards your goals.  Remember that the number on the scale can not compare to that healthy feeling you have after you work out – do not hold too tight to the numbers, with consistent work you will reach your goals.  Remember that you only get what you give – paying for classes that you don’t attend, or don’t give your all are worthless and won’t yield results.  Set small goals and work towards them and then build on them when your body is ready.  I’ve been very lucky to have the results that I have had, I have put the work in, but I also know that this journey was not a short term one.  I have made these lifestyle changes as opposed to doing a workout and dieting for a short period of time to lose weight only to stop and put it all back on.  I enjoy food, very much, but moderation has been my key.  I do exercise that I enjoy so that I know I will keep coming back.  Anyone can do this!

Sincerely
Jamie
